Youth
Sailing
The RYA Youth
Sailing Scheme has been developed to allow younger sailors (8-16years)
to gain skills and experience in smaller chunks and provides an enjoyable
and progressive way to learn to sail. Each certified course provides an
opportunity to recognise achievements. After completion of the four stages
of the youth scheme they can proceed to the advanced courses of the National
Scheme.
Start Sailing – Stage 1(2 Day)
By the end of this introductory course students will have a basic understanding
of how a boat sails and some experience of steering and handling the boat.
Start
Sailing – Stage 2 (2 Days)
At the completion of this course students will have a widening range of
skills and knowledge and be well on the way to being a confident small
boat sailor.
Start
Sailing – Stage 3 (2 Days)
Having completed stage 3 students will be able to sail in any direction
and rig and launch their boat. Skills and knowledge mean that they can
regard themselves as a sailor not a beginner.
Stage 3 is equivalent to level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme.
Start
Sailing - Stage 4 (2 Days)
Stages 1-3 are normally completed in single-handed dinghies (Oppies or
Toppers and the like). Stage 4 provides the skills to sail a double-handed
boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat. Passing this
course is the natural entry point for the advanced courses in the National
Sailing Scheme.
