Equipment & Fuel check two boats before launching / setting out

Second boat available to Runner if required

Engine kill cord worn when engine is running (amended 29th July 2023)

Prioritise people before property

No smoking on or near boats

Driver

Minimum RYA powerboat level 2

Dressed to enter the water

VHF radio attached to driver

Equipment

Anchor chain and warp, Bailer, Boat hook, Chart, Engine kill cord and spare kill cord, Fire extinguisher, First aid kit, Flares, Foghorn, Fuel, Knife, Paddle, Survival blanket, Tide tables, Throw line, Toolkit, Towing bridle, Towlines, Whistle. Rope ladder.

Kayak capsize

Engine off in proximity of the casualty

Hold the rear of the kayak to enable the casualty to regain.

Alternatively bring the kayak alongside and support the kayak.

Retrieve the casualty’s paddle.

Hold off for a short period until casualty is confident to continue.

Maintain careful observation.

Paddleboard capsize

Engine off in proximity of the casualty

Position power boat to enable you to hold the nose of the board to enable the casualty to regain from the tail, with help from rope tied by the driver.

Retrieve the casualty’s paddle.

Hold off for a short period until casualty is confident to continue.

Maintain careful observation.

Casualty unable to regain kayak or board

Use the ladder to recover the casualty to the safety boat.

Use the life ring to tow the casualty to shallow water.

Use VHF radio to seek advice from Runner.

Recover board / kayaks to shore or secure to buoy.
